As part of the Wilma Dykeman Legacy's first series of talks - in the fall of 2013 at UNC Asheville's Osher Center for Lifelong Learning (OLLI) - Darin Waters spoke on Wilma Dykeman as Journalist. At that time he was a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at UNCA. In 2017, Dr. Waters became a full professor at UNCA as well as the executive director of UNCA's Office of Community Engagement. Four years later, he was appointed North Carolina's Deputy Secretary for Archives and History. In that capacity, Dr. Waters serves as State Historian for North Carolina and oversees the state's currently established 27 historical sites.
The 2013 UNCA OLLI series included talks on Wilma Dykeman as historian, journalist, environmentalist, teacher, novelist and traveler. She and her husband James Stokely co-authored the award-winning Neither Black Nor White (1957) and more than 20 feature articles for The New York Times Magazine, The Nation, The Progressive, and other national magazines during the Civil Rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's.
